Protecting More Coral Reefs in Fiji It’s a hot, humid day and I’m visiting the village of Waivunia on the island of Vanua Levu in Fiji. I’m sitting around a kava bowl with community elders, and we are discussing how to protect and conserve their marine resources.

Pollution, elevated nutrients and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, have significantly degraded coral reefs off Suva. Leeward reefs in Northern Viti Levu and some other areas have probably been degraded by increased sedimentation from agricultural areas. Heavy metals and faecal coliform contamination from sewage heavily pollute reefs close to urban areas such as Suva.

Our journey began in as “Hiri” teaching rural communities in Papua New Guinea and Fiji simple coral restoration processes, planting over fragments of coral in nearby reefs. Now, we have rebranded as “ProReef” and created a series of educational and tourist experiences that directly support reef conservation activities.

This month we released our Fiji final report, titled Global Reef Expedition Final Report: Lau Province, Fiji, it reveals that despite vibrant coral communities, Fiji’s reefs show signs of trouble. % coral cover on reef in Lau Province, Fiji.
